A welcome discussion on idleness... my first thought: VERY un-American. We are the go-go nation. Do, plan, achieve, advance, fulfill destiny, maximize potential, blah, blah. I am not knocking American values, work ethic, accomplishments. Hardly. Only since becoming a dual citizen have I come to appreciate these American wonders and gifts to the world (yes, along w the bad and worse).

Next immediate association, and one for you -- dear fellow early childhood educator! Kenneth Grahame's "The Wind in the Willows" and Water Rat's credo: Believe me, my young friend, there is NOTHING--absolute nothing--half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing,' he went on dreamily: `messing--about--in--boats; messing----'

Hisgkinson is the editor of a cool British magazine called The Idler (http://www.idler.co.uk/). I wonder how much time and effort he puts into it.

I really like this idea. I'm going to look for this book!

You used the magic word: balance.

Too many of us don't know how to achieve a workable balance for more than short bursts. Where is it written that we have to be all one way or the other. A pleasant blend of work (necessary for survival) and pleasurable play (necessary for sanity) results in a whole, fulfilled, and happy person.

Best wishes with finding the balance that works for you. Maybe you can share the secret with us so we too can find our own balance.

I went to a talk by Tom Hodgkinson and liked him. Good luck with your resolution!
